Round One of the brand new Honda Grom’s on the Gas Competition was completed in perfect conditions over the last two days at Victoria’s Newry circuit.

Riders were treated to a couple of days of dust free coaching before being put through their paces in the four point scoring categories.

Torrential rain on Monday night provided slightly muddy conditions for day one of the competition, but it wasn’t enough to slow down young 13 year old Yamaha gun rider Dylan Long.

With consistently good performances in all four point scoring categories, Long came out on top of a talented bunch of junior riders all battling for the top spot on the podium.

"I’m stoked to have won here today," said Long.

"I’ve been working hard with my dad on my riding technique and it paid off.

The competition as a whole was awesome, but I really got a lot out of the riding school also.  The public speaking was a bit daunting for everyone though I think."

Long won overall on the day by one point after taking two solid victories in both of the ‘On Bike’ categories (Technique Judging and lap time), while backing it up with a fourth and a sixth place respectively in the public speaking and fitness sectors.

Second place overall went to Hamish McEwen.  The 15 year old KTM rider took his 250F to a solid 2nd place in the lap time sector, while also finishing a credible 2nd in both the fitness and public speaking categories.

A fifth place in the ‘On Bike’ technique category dropped McEwen to second place when the final scores were tallied, just one point shy of Dylan Long.

"I gave it everything I had today, but I know what I have to work on," said McEwen.

Rounding out the podium in third place was Rosebud rider Geran Stapleton.  The Honda rider performed consistently throughout the day, scoring a 2nd and 3rd in the ‘On Bike’ Categories, however a couple of 5th placings in the public speaking and fitness categories proved costly in the overall standings.

The Honda Grom’s on the Gas Competition now heads to Darwin in the Northern Territory for round 2.
